Space Traveler Reveals Mental Health Struggle In the Wake of ‘Tsunami of Backlash After Historic Trip

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has spoken candidly about her struggle with mental health after enduring a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.

Amanda Nguyen – celebrated as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the short-duration mission in the spring, which also included high-profile passengers.

The much-publicized journey was heavily criticized by some, who cited its expense and ecological impact.

Reflecting on the ordeal, Ms. Nguyen, who was celebrated as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the negative reaction eclipsed her moment under an landslide of gendered hatred.

“I told her my depression might last for years,” the astronaut shared in a public message, describing a supportive conversation from a mission companion in the days following the journey.

She described the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an unprecedented psychological assault.

“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she wrote. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”

Eclipsed by Backlash

The researcher, who has conducted studies in gynecological science and performed experiments during the flight, said every professional achievement – including her lab work and extensive preparation to the symbolic importance of her roots – was drowned out under the tide of misogyny.

She is widely recognized for her tireless campaigning protecting the rights of victims of sexual violence.

Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was deferred after an attack during her college days, leading to a protracted legal battle.

Finding Solid Ground

Now, eight months after reaching space, she has stated the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she expressed gratitude the well-wishers whose kindness helped save her. “You were my salvation,” she said.

She noted that amid the criticism, important benefits had come out of the mission, including elevated attention for her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.

The Historic Journey

The fully automated New Shepard rocket lifted off from its launch site in April, carrying the six-woman crew on a short trip that crossed the edge of space.

The diverse crew also included accomplished professionals from different industries.

The company behind the mission is a private space firm founded by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
