Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a coordinated attack on an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory used by the IS group, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, identified by surveillance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was located in mountains just to the north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a number of entry passages down to the facility... initial indications are that the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the operation conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established extremist governance over parts of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike underscores the UK's leading role, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eliminate any resurgence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary remarked.

UK warplanes have conducted patrols over Syria to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of IS after its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank the personnel of the UK armed forces participating in this strike for their skill and their valour," the Defence Secretary added. "They were part of a great many British personnel on duty over Christmas and New Year. This action, to eliminate terrorist threats who endanger our way of life, shows how our armed forces are ready to step up, all year round, protecting the UK at home and strong abroad."

In December, the US military conducted what it called a "large-scale strike" against IS targets in Syria, after an assault claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The United Nations says Islamic State still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in both countries.
