Dallas Cowboys Owner Jones Penalized $250,000 for ‘Accidental’ Obscene Gesture toward Spectators
The NFL has imposed a substantial $250,000 fine on Dallas Cowboys proprietor Jones for an action he describes as an “inadvertent” obscene gesture made toward attendees during a recent game at the Jets’ stadium.
Widely circulated footage appeared to show Jones flashing his middle finger at Jets fans, though he insists he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Cowboys fans in attendance as his team clinched a 37-22 victory.
“It was regrettable. That was essentially an exchange with Cowboys supporters seated near me,” Jones stated during a radio appearance. “There was a large group of Dallas supporters—not New York fans, Cowboys fans. The whole venue was filled with enthusiasm for the Dallas team.”
He further clarified that the signal was completely accidental, happening amid the excitement following the team’s last score. “I just put up the wrong digit,” he noted. “It was inadvertently done. This is sincere. If you want to call it unplanned, you can. However, it got corrected pretty quick.”
League Precedent for Owner Fines
This incident isn’t the first time an NFL owner has been fined for misconduct. Previous cases include:
- Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper was penalized $300K for tossing a beverage at fans in January 2024.
- Former Titans proprietor Adams was issued a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a similar obscene gesture.
Jones, who is recognized for his media savvy, possesses an estimated net worth of around $16bn, so the fine easily payable for the wealthy owner.

This event comes after a controversial offseason for Jones, who encountered widespread backlash from the Dallas supporters after the team dealt star pass rusher Parsons to the Green Bay Packers.
